About Nigeria

Nigeria is an African country on the Gulf of Guinea; a federal presidential republic and a representative democracy, in which the president holds executive power. Legislative power is held by the federal government and the two chambers of the legislature: the House of Representatives

and the Senate.

The country is a federal system with three tiers (Federal, State and Local governments), with about 36 states; each of which has an elected governor and a House of Assembly.

Nigeria has 774 local government areas (LGAs), each administered by a local government council consisting of a chairman, who is the chief executive, and other elected members, who are referred to as councillors. Each LGA is further subdivided into a minimum of ten and a maximum of twenty wards.

Nigeria has a democratic constitution with a federal system modelled on the US. The executive is headed by the president, the legislature is formed by the National Assembly of Senate and House of Representatives, and the judiciary is headed by a supreme court.

The Nigerian Government has a number of ministries including The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI). The ministry is responsible for creating wealth and employment, reducing poverty, and stimulating and diversifying the economy. The Federal Capital Territory is now Abuja, after moving from Lagos State.

Nigeria's population is estimated at about 240 million, with GDP of about 362.8 billion USD.
